Our Name, Our Legacy

Named in memory of Rabbi Yosef Tendler zt”l, legendary menahel of Mechinas Ner Yisroel, the Kollel carries forward his vision: every Jew, no matter his path, can build his life around Torah.

Rabbi Yosef Tendler zt”l was the longtime menahel of Yeshiva Ner Yisroel High School in Baltimore, where he dedicated over four decades to guiding and inspiring generations of talmidim. A native of New York and the son of Rav Isaac Tendler, a Radin talmid, he began his education at Rabbi Jacob Joseph and later attended Yeshiva University. Though originally planning to return to Yeshiva University, his summer in Lakewood under Rav Aharon Kotler transformed his path, and he remained in Beth Medrash Govoha for 11 years, becoming one of its early talmidim.

In 1961, after various teaching opportunities fell through, Rav Tendler was encouraged by Rav Aharon and Rav Dov Schwartzman to apply for a position at Yeshivas Ner Yisroel. He was hired to teach 12th grade, and by 1964, was appointed menahel of the Mechina, a role he would hold for over 45 years. His leadership brought stability and growth to the division, earning the deep admiration of talmidim and fellow mechanchim alike.

Rav Tendler’s hashkafah and chinuch were shaped by his great mentors—Rav Aharon Kotler, Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky, and Rav Yaakov Weinberg—and he carried their values into his work with humility, strength, and vision.

Leadership

Rabbi Aron Tendler Rosh Kollel

A Baltimore native, Rabbi Aron Tendler grew up in the community where he and his wife now continue to raise their family. He began his learning in Mechinas Ner Yisroel and continued in the Yeshiva for two years before leaving to Eretz Yisroel to learn under Rav Tzvi Kaplan.

Rabbi Tendler then spent 14 years in the Mir, where he learned under Rav Asher Arieli, whom he considers his primary rebbi. He also served as a second seder Rosh Chabura for ten years, guiding and learning with talmidim from around the world.

Since returning to Baltimore four years ago, Rabbi Tendler has continued to immerse himself in serious learning and has been privileged to benefit from the hadracha and depth of thought of Rabbi Ahron Lopiansky, whose insight played a significant role in shaping the vision of Kollel Nachlas Yosef.

Rabbi Shimon Greenwald Rosh Chabura, Afternoon Seder

Rabbi Shimon Greenwald grew up in Lakewood and learned in the Yeshiva of Long Beach, where he developed close relationships with his rebbeim, Rav Chaim Yehoshua Hoberman and Rav Pinchas Jochnowitz. He continued his learning in the Mir Yerushalayim, spending almost two years under the guidance of Rav Asher Arieli.

Upon returning to the U.S., Rabbi Greenwald joined Beth Medrash Govoha, where he learned for seven years and established himself as a serious and dedicated ben Torah. He is the son-in-law of Harav Dovid Heber, Rav of Khal Ahavas Yisroel Tzemach Tzedek and a prominent posek in Baltimore.

Rabbi Greenwald brings a depth of learning, clarity, and consistency to his role as Rosh Chabura at Kollel Nachlas Yosef, guiding the afternoon seder with warmth and insight.
